Dissolve sodium hydroxide with water to make very strong basic solution. Sodium hydroxide is very dangerous so we are going to be very careful with this.
Once the sodium hydroxide is dissolved with water, we can add zinc powder and then zinc powder also are going to dissolved to some extent and that is what’s going to coat the outside of our pennies.
after that put the coins in the plate.
So here we have our hot plate with coins in solution of sodium hydroxide and then also we have zinc powder in there and that zinc powder is dissolved in water much of it and that is what’s coating pennies. It only takes 15 to 30 minutes for coins to be covered in zinc.
What will happen to gold coins?
The hot plate is really useful because it bits the hole process up.
After just a little bit you can see its just being coated with the zinc on the outside the coins.
And after little while the copper color is no longer visible what you see that is zinc color.
So when we apply heat, that layer of zinc is going to melt with copper beneath and we are going to end up with brass.
The nice thing about brass is it does not corrode like zinc and that means we are going to have our gold coins for years.
